What is Movember and why do people grow moustaches? Rules and good causes explained

Fellas — want to grow something furry on your face in aid of charity?

Well, your time has arrived.

November marks the time when that top lip facial hair makes a more common than usual appearance on high streets and in pubs as blokes test out their moustache growth rate.

That’s right, it is the return of Movember, the men’s health campaign that has been running for almost 20 years.

Backed by Son Of Rambow and Detroit actor Will Poulter, this year’s campaign focuses on raising awareness around mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

What is Movember?
Bringing the diminutive word ‘Mo’ — meaning moustache — and ‘November’ together, the annual event aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

The aim of Movember, also known as No Shave November, is for perfectly ordinary men to brave the task of growing a moustache to raise money for charities.

By taking part in Movember, men also help to raise awareness of men’s health in a very public and obvious way.

Movember started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003, when a group of friends decided to revive an old-fashioned trend — the moustache.

At that time about 30 people took part, and the event has become more popular ever since.

Now, millions across the globe take part in fundraising activities that stretch well beyond simply growing some facial hair.

For 2022, people are being encouraged to run or walk 60km over the course of the month.

Campaigners have picked 60 because that is the number of men lost to suicide every hour across the world.

Those with less appetite for keeping moving can organise a “mo-ment”, getting people together in person or virtually for an event.

How to take part
The Movember Foundation is a global men’s health charity that raises vital funds and awareness for the often-ignored issues of men’s health, by encouraging men to boldly grow a moustache for the month of November.

What are the Movember rules?
Once you’ve registered you just need to follow these rules for the whole of November:

  • Begin November 1 with a clean shave
  • For the whole of the month you must grow and groom your moustache
  • No beards
  • And definitely no sneakily joining your chin to your handlebars to make a goatee.

So whether you can grow a moustache as bushy as Einstein’s, as shaped as Freddie Mercury’s or one as pointed and refined as Hercule Poirot, now is your chance to do so for a good cause.

And for anyone mocking the look? Tell them where their donation can go in exchange for their chuckles.
